The Year That Was 2017. A bunch of Top 5 Lists here for everyone's (or at least my) entertainment! At least in terms of media.
My Top 5 Completed TV Shows:
5. Pretty Little Liars: Even though this absolutely went down in quality, I have to have it on the list for the hours upon hours of strong female-centric female-friendship based entertainment it provided. Plus hours on hours of babbling good times with friends. <3
4. Bomb Girls: I was surprised at how much I really enjoyed this little show. Something I watched rapidly before it left Netflix, it thankfully proved to be bingeable on its own merits.
3. American Crime Story: The People vs OJ Simpson: This was ENORMOUSLY well done, fully engaging, with an incredible cast.
2. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: A bit on the list to be emblematic of my completion of ALL OF STAR TREK EVER but also it's truly an excellent show, deep in mythos, with an actual continuous arc. The first truly serialized Trek. And very very good.
1. Orphan Black: I WILL MISS THIS SHOW SO MUCH IT WAS SO GOOD TATIANA MASLANY IS A DAMN MIRACLE.
Also: Big Little Lies would have been on here, as it was an excellent series, but it's been announced they are doing a S2 after all, so it's not truly a limited series in the end. Whoops!
My Top 5 In-Theater Movies:
5. Star Wars: The Last Jedi: I didn't love this as much as Force Awakens or Rogue One but the more I sit with it, the more I like it. All in all a great entry into Star Wars canon.
4. Lady Bird: Lived up to the hype. Wonderful movie, excellent portrayal of a mother/daughter relationship.
3. Wonder Woman: This was SO REFRESHING and so much better than any other DC movie I've seen so far. Gal Gadot is truly excellent as Wonder Woman.
2. Girl's Trip: This. Was. Hysterical. An absolute riot. Tiffany Hadish... holy moly she's so funny. EXCELLENT MOVIE EVERYONE SEE IT.
1. Hidden Figures: The first movie I saw in the theater in 2017 remained the best. Such an important story, so so glad it was finally told.
Also: Thor: Ragnarok gets an honorable mention. SO GOOD.
My Top 5 Books:
5. River of Teeth by Sarah Gailey: Alternative history with hippos and some of the best representation of different people I've seen. Fat bad-ass hero! Queer rep! And it's JUST A SUPER HECKIN' GOOD TIME TBH.
4. The Stone Sky (The Broken Earth book 3) by N.K. Jemisn: It's a sign of how strong the books I read this year were that this is number 4 on this list. It was an excellent conclusion to an amazing trilogy. Jemisin is a modern day sci-fi master, in my not-so-humble opinion.
3. Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi: The first book I started in 2017 remained one of the best. Masterful in portraying intergenerational trauma with the thankful backdrop of excellent storytelling.
2. Why We Can't Wait by Martin Luther King, Jr.: I read a lot of books that helped me learn and gain more "wokeness" this year, and this was probably the one that I also found most fueling. Dr. King's words resonate today and before anyone posts another quote from him in response to protests, riots, or Black Lives Matter... read this book, especially Letter from a Birmingham Jail. It's important.
1. The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas: AMAZING YA NOVEL. Seriously, this should be required reading, it was so good and gave such a profound, nuanced understanding of police brutality and the impact it has on a family and community.
OK, things that didn't make this list but so easily could have because they were also incredible: Hunger by Roxane Gay, Vow of Celibacy by Erin Judge, A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara
And thus concludes my 2017 media journey!
