TV I Have Finished Or Stopped Watching in 2019
A Series of Unfortunate Events (Netflix Original Series)(This was a truly wonderful adaptation of the book series. Marvelously done.)
The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix Original Series)(Truly a joy of a show! While I loved it less over time, it was definitely unique and fun. Started strong and ended well, and that's definitely awesome.)
Frasier (Started 8/13/2018, Completed 2/20/2019)(Re-Watch)(It's really a very very good show.)
John Mulaney: New In Town (3/5/2019)(Fun and cute, though not as amazing as expected for my first foray into his comedy. Will watch more, though!)
Party of Five (Started 4/23/17, Completed 3/20/19)(Re-Watch YAY!)(OMG I FINISHED! This show wasn't NEARLY as good as my inner teen remembered, but I was glad to revisit the Salingers (who are terrible) and there were definitely some very good arcs and moments mixed in with ALL THE CHARACTERS BEING AWFUL.)
Friends From College (Netflix Original Series)(I am super bummed this didn't get picked up for a third season. The first season was rocky, but I felt like it really found its stride in season 2. Especially loved Lisa's arc in S2. Sigh.)
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (CRY THIS SHOW IS OVER I AM SO SAD IT WAS SO GREAT AND CREATIVE AND WONDERFUL AND PERFECT CRY CRY CRY)
Marvel's Daredevil (Netflix Original Series)(Technically finished watching this last year, but this is the year it wasn't renewed. I liked it, but am also ok with it being over)
The Defenders (Netflix Original Series)(Technically finished watching it last year, but this is the year it wasn't renewed. I'm bummed it only got 1 season, it was really enjoyable.)
Santa Clarita Diet (Netflix Original Series)(SO sad this wasn't picked up for a 4th season. Funny, brilliant, and Sheila and Joel were the best couple. Abby was incredible. Sigh.)
Sense8 (Netflix Original Series)(Almost a year after they released the finale movie, we finally watched it. This show was brilliant and amazing and I'm still so angry at Netflix for not renewing it for more, especially after seeing the ending and how AMAZING it was and knowing how much MORE AMAZING a full third season would have/could have been. I miss my sensate babies.)
Game of Thrones(I'm not exactly sad this has ended, it was an uneven mess at times, often leaned way too heavily into sexist stereotyping, and was way too hella rape focused for way too long...but it also had incredible moments, amazing worldbuilding, and characters I grew deeply invested in. I'll miss this giant epic show, even itf the final 2 episodes were a bit disappointing (well, mainly the penultimate episode).)
Fosse/Verdon (As far as I know, this was a one-time only mini-series- and I'm not sure how they'd do more, given the story it told- and it was EXCELLENT. Michelle Williams blew me away. Incredible story. Loved it.)
Luke Cage (Netflix Original Series)(We finally finished this! It was good, but just...slow. Truly the acting and storytelling were excellent, and season 1 was also paced better than season 2, but it could have been a 10-11 episode season and each episode could have 15 minutes cut off it, and that would have been better.)
When They See Us (Netflix Limited Series)(What a powerful, painful, important gift this was.)
When They See Us Now(7/21/2019) (A powerful companion interview/post-show to When They See Us.)
Good Omens (Amazon Prime Original Series)(This was a great miniseries, very well-done adaptation of an excellent book!)
Jane the Virgin WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH I'm so sad this show is over!!! It ended so well, perfectly imo, and I just will forever love the Villanueva family, the whole extended one. I'm grateful this show was here for 5 whole seasons and look forward to one day re-watching. <3)
Tales of the City (Netflix Original Series)(This is listed as a limited series and no season 2 has been announced so for now it goes in the completed column! This was delightful. I loved it very much and it made me cry and laugh. I'd like to see the original miniseries sometime!)
Orange is the New Black (Netflix Original Series)(My goodness what a run this show had. While it certainly had its ups and downs in the middle seasons, it ended incredibly strongly. I'm grateful for the awareness it brought to privatized prisons, to ICE, and to what imprisoned women face in general. Particularly in the last couple of seasons I'm grateful for how it focused on re-entry. Remarkable performances from so many people in a remarkable show. Powerhouse.)
Community (Started 8/15/2019, Completed 11/3/2019)(Re-Watch)(This was actually the first time we watched seasons 6 and 7, neither of which were close to as good as seasons 1-5. Season 7 was particularly rough. But all in all a clever and entertaining show, with many wonderful performances and lots of heart and creativity.)
Queer Eye: We're In Japan! (Netflix Original Series)(THIS WAS SO GOOD I AM SO SAD IT WAS SO SHORT WAAAAAAAAAAAAH)
MOVIES!
Movies Watched in 2019
On The Basis of Sex (1/20/19)(TERRIFIC! I want to know everything about RBG now. Well-acted, well-paced, compelling movie. Loved it.)
The Princess Bride (Re-Watch)(A huge favorite of mine, watching it at an Alamo Movie Party was SO MUCH FUN.)
Isn't it Romantic? (2/4/2019)(VERY cute! Love seeing a fat romcom leading lady, and not have her fatness define her in any way. Thoroughly enjoyed it.)
Blockers (2/9/19)(Silly and funny! Thoroughly enjoyed.)
A Simple Favor (2/9/19)(VERY good. Lots of solid twists and turns, excellent acting, really enjoyable story.)
Can You Ever Forgive Me?(2/9/19)(ALSO very good, if super sad at times.)
<>Captain Marvel(3/22/2019)(THIS WAS INCREDIBLE. I love Carol Danvers. I adore Goose. The soundtrack was everything. Her friendship with Maria Rambeau was the best. ALL OF IT WAS GREAT.)
Sunshine Cleaning (3/31/2019)(This was quirky and clever, and nice to see younger Amy Adams & Emily Blunt being sisters. Enjoyable movie!)
Stripes (3/31/2019)(I had never seen this classic 1981 comedy. It was pretty dull, not even 1981 funny imho.)
The Best of Enemies (4/10/2019)(This was very good and enjoyable! Might have been a little white savior-y, but hard to know how much was Hollywood and how much was just real life, since it's based on a true story.)
Avengers: Endgame(4/28/2019)(IT WAS SO SO SO GOOD. Hated the fat suit on Thor, loved every single other thing. Felt like a big gift. YAY.)
Someone Great(5/8/1019)(This was a delightful movie, a romcom of a different sort, focusing mostly on the love between friends while exploring the devastation of a break up.)
The Incredibles 2 (5/31/2019)(Very cute! SUPER obvious bad guy but overall thoroughly enjoyable!)
Christopher Robin(6/8/19)(OK, this was very cute and very sweet and lovely. Glad to have watched it! I thought Pooh looked creepy but NOPE.)
Always Be My Maybe (6/19/19)(Alright this was GREAT And SO ADORABLE and I LOVED it. The Keanu bit was PRICELESS. Just so delightful.)
Wine Country(6/25/19)(CUTE AF! Loved watching these actresses together and now want to do a girls' trip to Napa! It was the perfect level of engagement after a stressful day.)
The Beach Bum(7/20/2019)(STILL not sure what I watched this movie was weird AF! IT was wild. Would probs be fun to watch drunk or high, lol.)
The Lion King (2019)(7/20/2019)(I thought they did a very nice job with this live-action remake. It was beautiful, the animals looked amazing, and I liked the additions made to the dialogue. I didn't like the major cut to Be Prepared, felt some kind of way about Shenzi ALMOST having a story, and recognized that a tiny bit of the magic was lost-whether to adulthood or live-action, I'm not sure.)
Mary, Queen of Scots (7/21/2019)(This was really very very good. I enjoyed it, was so very engaged in it, and was happy to experience it with afternoon tea!)
The Farewell (8/4/2019)(Wow this was incredible. Great to see Awkwafina in a dramatic role, and it got me thinking about all kinds of things. TRULY an excellent film.)
Now and Then(8/6/2019)(Re-Watch)(I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO SO MUCH. While it doesn't age perfectly (it's very lily-white and Roberta shoulda been straightforwardly LGBTQ+) it comes damn close, and the friendship on display is just the best. Ahhhh.)
To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar(8/9/2019)(Re-Watch)(This movie is MUCH more intense than I recalled it being, but still very good. I'd be so interested in what it would be like if it was made today....but in the 90s, it was progressive af.)
Where'd You Go, Bernadett?(8/16/2019)(This was ok- not as enjoyable as the novel. The pacing felt very off, though the performances were all excellent. Still, fun times with friends!)
Downton Abbey(9/12/2019)(What a lovely coda to a lovely show! Went to a fancy dress night for this and had a marvelous time! It was simply wonderful to revisit the people of Downton, both upstairs and downstairs, and to be pulled back into that soapy world. Made me want to re-watch the series!)
Paris is Burning(9/20/2019)(This was a quite good documentary about drag ball culture from the 80s. Really helpful in understanding more deeply what I'm seeing in Pose!)
Ocean's 8(Sept 29)(Re-Watch)(Watching this after spending the morning at the Met was extra fun!!)
Charlie's Angels(Sept 30)(Re-Watch)(Still fun!)
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (Sept 30)(Almost all the humans deserve to die and I hope the dinosaurs win in the next movie.)
Fried Green Tomatoes (Oct 1)(Re-Watch)(Always love this classic)
Don't Tell Mom the Baby-Sitters Dead(Re-Watch)(Oct 1)(I used to love this SO MUCH and I swear it holds up. Amazing.)
Beetlejuice(Re-Watch)(Oct 26)(First movie of Halloween Movie Drinking Game Day! I hadn't seen this is years and years and it was quite fun!)
Practical Magic(Re-Watch)(Oct 26)(Another one I had not seen in ages and ages. I quite liked it!)
Hocus Pocus (Re-Watch)(Oct 26)(The best Halloween movie, full stop! Love the annual tradition.)
Scream(Re-Watch)(Oct 26)(I had not seen this in quite a long time but it holds up well!)
Sleepaway Camp(Oct 26)(This was so awful lolol)
The Dark Crystal(11/09/2019)(Re-Watch)(This was a bit slow which is understandable for 1982, and a bit creepy given it was a kids' movie, and also pretty good! And now I feel prepared to start the new Netflix series.)
Let it Snow(11/12/2019)(Cute Netflix original holiday movie! It was just what I wanted from that kind of movie. Also it felt effortlessly diverse, which was truly lovely.)
Muppet Treasure Island(11/14/2019)(Our first Disney+ watch! This was very fun and adorable, just as a Muppet movie should be!)
Finding Dory (11/15/2019)(Re-Watch)(This is such a good movie. Love it as a sequel to Finding Nemo.)
Star Wars: Episode I- The Phantom Menace (11/17/2019)(Re-Watch)(If I'm gonna watch all of the SW movies in chronological order before the grand finale comes out in December, I've gotta start here. It's pretty much a trash movie, with a few little cute things and nice bits of history building here and there.)
The Rocketeer(11/22/2019)(Re-Watch)(Much slower than I remember as a child, with far less flying around with a rocket on your back! Kind of a bummer tbh.)
Thankskilling(11/23/2019)(This was terrible in an amazing way and probs a new turkey day tradition. LOLOLOL)
A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood(11/24/2019)(This was LOVELY and SWEET and WONDERFUL and I WEPT. Tom Hanks as Fred Rogers was absolutely perfect.)
Star Wars: Episode II- Attack of the Clones(11/24/2019)(If this movie was only the political spy thriller part, it would actually not be so bad. The angsty romance between Anakin & Padme is what makes this hard to watch. Well, and Anakin's utter put-upon entitled existence, but that makes sense for his character arc.)
Mary Poppins Returns (11/28/2019)(Re-Watch)(Such a delightful sequel. I love everything they did to update and call back to the original story without replicating it at all.)
Holiday In the Wild (11/29/2019)(This was cute and sweet and warm and fuzzy, but not particularly Christmas-y. Some elements but not many.)
Charlie's Angels: Full Throttle (11/29/2019)(Re-Watch)(Not bad at all tbh. A bit ridiculous but in the ways it is supposed to be.)
Wreck it Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet (11/29/2019)(Honestly this was GREAT. Super clever and enjoyable.)
Frozen 2(11/30/2019)(Truly a lovely film. I really enjoyed it, and look forward to snagging the soundtrack at some point. Laughed and cried!)
Star Wars: Episode III- Revenge of the Sith(12/1/2019)(Re-Watch)(It is a travesty how slow so much of this is. The pinnacle of the Vader trilogy and the moment Anakin becomes Vader...they should be so much more than they were. Ah, well. At least I'm through the not very good ones!)
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer(12/1/2019)(Re-Watch)(TRADITIONAL PUT UP THE TREE MOVIE YAY!)
Solo: A Star Wars Story (12/2/2019)(Re-Watch)(I still find this movie very fun. Good heist, good seeding of things we know, fun new characters. Yay!)
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (12/4/2019)(Re-Watch)(I love this movie. It's so heartbreaking and so good and really adds something special to the SW canon in my opinion.)
Girl's Trip (12/6/2019)(Re-Watch)(Watched this again ON a girl's trip with my besties and that made it even better!)
A Christmas Prince(12/6/2019)(Re-Watch)(Girl's Weekend Christmas movies yessssss)
A Christmas Prince: The Royal Wedding(12/7/2019)(Re-Watch)(Girl's Weekend Christmas movies yessssssssssss)
A Christmas Prince: The Royal Baby(12/7/2019)(Very excited to watch this on girl's weekend- the weakest of the Christmas Prince trilogy, still so fun.)
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope (12/8/2019)(Re-Watch)(I enjoyed this more than I ever have before, I think both because seeing the prequels first show how high quality it is comparitively and because I'm watching in chronological order, which I love.)
Star Wars Episode V: Empire Strikes Back(12/11/2019)(Re-Watch)(This movie is BLEAK! But also powerful; there is a TON of super important stuff that happens in it. Still not my fave, but quite good. Looking forward to the next one soon!)
Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi (12/13/2019)(Re-Watch)(Triumph! Ewoks! Yes! This one is super fun, but I'm surprised to find that A New Hope is maybe my favorite of the OT??)
Klaus (12/14/2019)(I really enjoyed this new Christmas movie from Netflix! Cute story, a bit similar to Santa Claus is Comin' To Town, but updated, and with some real sweetness in it. Perhaps a new annual tradition, who knows?)
Tangled(12/14/2019)(Re-Watch)(I really love this movie; Maximus is hilarious, Mother Goethel is one of the more evil villains, and Rapunzel and Flynn are lovely. Songs are great, too.)
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens (12/15/2019)(Re-Watch)(I still really love this one! Rey is fantastic, Poe and Finn are really fun and wonderful, and seeing everyone all together again is so great. And it has one of the most heartbreaking moments in all of Star Wars in it with Han dying at the hands of his son.)
Star Wars Episode VIII: The Last Jedi (12/19/2019)(Re-Watch)(Probably my least favorite of the newest run of SW movies, as it gets a little long and weird on the island and in the cave and all that. But I still love it, I love getting to see Leia use the Force, Poe Dameron being a giant troll is great, Rose is wonderful, and Finn and Rey's friendship is incredible. Still a very fun star war! And now I'm ready for the grand finale!)
The Knight Before Christmas (12/21/2019)(Sweet, fun, cutesy, predictable. Excellent Christmas movie!)
'Twas the Night Before Christmas (12/21/2019)(Re-Watch)(MOUSE MOVIE LOVE)
Muppet Family Christmas (12/21/2019)(Re-Watch)(Best Christmas movie ever I'm sure of it)
Mickey's Christmas Carol(12/21/2019)(Re-Watch)(YES Scrooge McDuck find that conscience!)
Holiday Rush (12/22/2019)(Fun, sweet, predictable, lovely Christmas movie from Netflix!)
Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (12/22/2019)(I'd by lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed in some parts of this, but overall it met all the criteria I needed it to, and I was highly entertained and invested. This trilogy has had some misses, but I love Rey very very much, Finn and Poe are wonderful, and BB8 is maybe my fave droid?? Maybe?)
Home Alone (12/23/2019)(Re-Watch)(Kevin McAllister has defended his home once again from the wet bandits! Excellent!)
Jack Frost (12/23/2019)(Re-Watch)(Not my favorite of the classic Rankin Bass movies, but still cute!)
Love, Actually (12/24/2019)(Re-Watch)(Unapologetically love this movie)
Frosty the Snowman (12/25/2019)(Re-Watch)(YAY FROSTY)
Christmas Inheritance (12/25/2019)(New to me this year, I actually really enjoyed this cute cheesy little Netflix movie!)
Elf (12/25/2019)(Re-Watch)(I adore this movie.)
The Year Without a Santa Claus (12/25/2019)(Re-Watch)(Annual must watch!)
The Santa Clause (12/25/2019)(Re-Watch)(This is such a cute little movie. I adore it.)
Home Alone (12/28/2019)(Re-Watch)(Again this holiday season! This time with friends and a drinking game attached, lol)
Little Women (2019)(12/29/2019)(Oh my goodness I sobbed. This was so very good. So very very good.)
